Zé Gotinha was created in 1986 for Brazil's polio vaccination campaign and became a familiar symbol of childhood immunisation for generations of families. The character faded from campaigns in later years, then returned to public debate when Lula, president again from 2023, publicly asked where the mascot had gone while promoting vaccination. Clips of the question circulated on social media and messaging apps, detached from the original speech. Brazilians now reuse it far beyond politics, applying the line whenever a familiar person, object or plan is unexpectedly absent.
