The line comes from Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, after she won for Best Female Video. He took the microphone to say he was happy for her but that Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time, and the opening phrase detached from the awkward moment itself. Shared as a short clip, reaction sound and caption across social media, it became a reusable way to stage a fake concession before switching to a different favourite, which is why editors still reach for it in rankings, debates and parody speeches.
