Osuwari comes from Inuyasha, the anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's manga that began airing in 2000. In the series Kagome can control Inuyasha through his enchanted necklace by saying osuwari, a dog training command meaning sit, which became one of the show's running gags. As anime clips spread on soundboards and in fan edits, the line joined other short Japanese catchphrases like tuturu as a reusable reaction sound, kept alive by nostalgia and its instant, recognisable punishment joke.
