The Wilhelm Scream was recorded in 1951 for the film Distant Drums, most likely voiced by singer Sheb Wooley. It took its name from Private Wilhelm in The Charge at Feather River in 1953, where the character cries out after being shot. Sound designer Ben Burtt rediscovered the stock recording and used it in Star Wars, starting its revival as an in joke among editors. It has since appeared in hundreds of films, television shows and games, becoming the most famous stock scream in cinema.
