The phrase became popular through NerdCast, the podcast from Jovem Nerd, in its Speak English segment about misheard English lyrics. Episode material associated with guests like Azaghal and Guga Mafra highlighted how Jim Diamond's 1984 hit I Should Have Known Better sounded like a Portuguese plea for a firefighter. Brazilian listeners shared the short chorus as a reaction clip, and the joke survived because the mondegreen is easy to hear once suggested. It remains a niche reference among fans of the podcast and misheard lyric humour.

Short clip of Jim Diamond singing I Should Have Known Better, misheard in Brazil as Ajuda o Bombeiro from the NerdCast Speak English classic meme.
This short excerpt lifts the chorus of Jim Diamond's I Should Have Known Better, but Brazilian listeners hear the English line as the Portuguese phrase ajuda o bombeiro, meaning help the firefighter. The singer delivers the hook with earnest, dramatic pop energy, which makes the accidental translation feel even funnier. That contrast between a serious eighties ballad tone and a random call for a firefighter turns a normal lyric into an instant punchline, perfect for moments when someone realises too late that they have made a very obvious mistake.
