Arkanoid was released by Taito as an arcade game in 1986, building on the brick-breaking gameplay made famous by Breakout, and its short game over tune became part of the arcade soundscape for players of that era. As retro gaming grew through emulators, compilation releases and gameplay videos, the jingle was lifted out of the arcade and shared online as a shorthand for losing. It survives because it is instantly recognisable, very short and emotionally clear, giving creators a nostalgic way to signal that a run, challenge or joke has come to an end.
