The bah dum tss comes from the traditional rimshot used by comedy drummers to accent a joke, a staple of stand-up stages and television comedy for decades. Its two-beat setup and cymbal finish became shorthand for a punchline, even when the joke itself was meant to fall flat. Short-form video creators adopted the same sting because it works without explanation, instantly telling viewers a joke has ended. That simplicity keeps it in regular use for sketches, memes and reaction clips.

The classic bah dum tss drum rimshot that follows a joke, with a snare hit and cymbal crash used to punctuate punchlines in comedy videos and memes.
The bah dum tss is the short drum sting every comedy act uses after a punchline, starting with two quick snare taps and landing on a bright cymbal crash that feels like a wink to the audience. It is instantly recognisable even without any words, because the rhythm itself signals that a joke has just landed, whether it was brilliant or deliberately terrible. Played over a reaction shot, a failed attempt, or a sarcastic caption, it turns an ordinary moment into a setup and payoff in under four seconds, inviting the viewer to laugh along or groan at the pun.
