The classic badum tish drum sting played after a punchline, with two quick drum hits and a cymbal crash to mark a joke landing or falling flat.

Badum tish is the short rimshot sting drummers play right after a punchline, built from two fast low drum hits followed by a bright crash cymbal. The rhythm copies the words ba dum tss, giving a joke a clear full stop and a little musical wink. It sounds cheerful when a line lands and deliberately cheesy when it does not, which is why the effect works both as applause and as gentle mockery. At just over a second long it adds timing, emphasis and a classic stand up feel without needing any spoken reaction.

Profi-Tipp

Drop badum tish on the exact frame the punchline ends, not under the words themselves. Leave a half second of silence before it so the two hits read clearly, then cut the cymbal tail short if the next line starts quickly.

Weitere Informationen

The badum tish sting comes from live vaudeville and burlesque shows, where house drummers underlined comics on stage with a quick rimshot after each gag. It carried into radio, television variety shows and stand up clubs, becoming the sound audiences expect after a corny one liner. Online it survived as a shorthand reaction in videos, streams and memes, used both to celebrate a clever pun and to tease a joke that fell flat, long after most listeners stopped seeing it played live.
