V.A.T.S. first appeared in Fallout 3, released in 2008, as the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System that let players pause combat and target specific body parts. The mechanic returned in later Fallout games, including Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4, keeping its distinctive activation sound familiar to players across the series. Gameplay editors soon lifted the short cue for montages, and meme creators adopted it as shorthand for locking onto a target, whether in a game or in real life. Its retro-futuristic tone still signals instant tactical focus.
