Half-Life 2, Valve's 2004 first-person shooter, features shambling headcrab zombies whose screams became instantly recognisable to players. Reversing that audio became a popular soundboard trick, because the backwards scream sounds even more inhuman than the original and fits horror edits, reaction clips and gaming memes. It spread through soundboard sites and short-form video, where creators reuse short, recognisable game audio for jumpscares and jokes, keeping a nearly two-decade-old game sound in circulation long after its release.
