The Nokia Tune comes from Gran Vals, a guitar piece by Spanish composer Francisco Tarrega from 1902, adapted as a ringtone for the Nokia 2110 in 1994. As Nokia phones spread worldwide in the late 1990s and 2000s, the melody became one of the most recognised sounds on the planet. It survived the smartphone era as shorthand for an old mobile phone, and creators still use it for retro scenes, fake calls and nostalgia jokes where a modern ringtone would not get the same reaction.
