Pac-Man debuted in Japanese arcades in 1980 as a Namco maze game, and the power pellet quickly became one of its most recognisable mechanics. Eating one of the four large dots turns the ghosts blue and edible for a short time, flipping the usual chase and letting Pac-Man score extra points. The sound has travelled far beyond the arcade through home ports, remakes, cartoons and later games in the series. Online, creators reuse it as shorthand for a sudden comeback, a power-up or a reversal of fortune in gaming clips and memes.
