The sound originates from Pac-Man, the arcade game released by Namco in 1980 and designed by Toru Iwatani. Sound designer Toshio Kai created the distinctive chomping noise by recording himself eating fruit and shortening it into the looping waka sound heard in gameplay. As Pac-Man became a global cultural icon through arcade cabinets, home ports and merchandise, its audio became shorthand for retro gaming itself. The running loop remains widely sampled in videos, remixes and memes decades later because it is recognisable in under two seconds.
