The tone comes from Sony's PlayStation Portable, the handheld console launched in 2004 that used the cross-media bar, or XMB, as its menu system. Every directional press and selection in that interface triggered a short electronic confirmation sound, which is why the clip is so closely tied to browsing games, music and videos on the device. As PSP nostalgia grew online, creators began lifting these system sounds for edits, streams and memes about handheld gaming. It remains useful because it is recognisable to former PSP owners yet short and neutral enough to work as a retro menu click.
