Super Mario Bros. 2 was released for the NES in North America in 1988, adapted from the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic. Unlike the first Mario platformer, it let players choose Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach or Toad, each with different strengths. Its short game over cue became familiar through repeated play sessions where lives were limited and restarts were frequent. The sound later circulated on soundboards and in video edits, where its unmistakable 8-bit defeat tone works even for viewers who never played the original game.
