Top Gun: Maverick is the 2022 sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, following naval aviator Pete Maverick Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, as he trains a new generation of fighter pilots. Its score, developed from the original film's iconic themes, became widely shared online as creators reused its most triumphant passages for edits, sports highlights and motivational videos. The music works because it is instantly recognisable even without the film, carrying associations of speed, skill and heroism that suit short-form content and high-energy montages.
