The rewinding VHS sound comes from the home video era, when cassette recorders in the 1980s and 1990s made a distinctive whirr while winding a tape back to the start. As those machines disappeared, the noise survived as a shorthand for going backwards in time in edits, memes and short videos. It is now shared online as a short, instantly recognisable effect for flashbacks, replays and throwback montages, especially in retro-styled content where the analogue texture itself signals nostalgia.
Über diesen Sound
The whirring, clicking sound of a VHS tape rewinding to its start, used in retro edits and nostalgic videos to signal a flashback or a rewind moment.
This short clip captures the familiar mechanical whirr of a VHS cassette being wound back, with rapid fluttering clicks, a soft motor hum and a final clunk as the tape reaches its beginning. It instantly sounds analogue and slightly worn, like an old living-room video recorder working hard in the background. In a video, that noise works as a clear time signal, telling viewers that the action is about to jump backwards, repeat a moment or reveal what happened before. Because almost everyone recognises the sound from childhood tapes, it also adds a warm, nostalgic feeling without needing any explanation or on-screen text.
