Windows XP, released by Microsoft in 2001, used small balloon tips to draw attention to system messages, and this brief pop accompanied their appearance. The sound became familiar to millions of desktop users during the operating system's long lifespan, and later survived through soundboards, reaction videos and nostalgia edits after newer versions of Windows changed their notification sounds. Its continued use owes much to that recognition: a fraction of a second is enough to suggest an old computer, a dated pop-up or a simpler era of desktop computing.
