Windows XP was released by Microsoft in 2001, and its shutdown chime quickly became one of the most recognisable sounds of early home computing, heard every time a PC powered down. Years later, creators began remixing that short chime with heavier bass and echo, sharing bass-boosted versions on soundboards and in video edits where the sound could act as a dramatic closer. Its continued use is driven mainly by nostalgia for a simpler era of computing, as well as by the contrast between the gentle original melody and the exaggerated, booming edit.
