The ba dum tss is the classic rimshot sting from vaudeville, stand-up comedy and early television variety shows, where a drummer would punctuate a comedian's punchline live on stage. The pattern became shorthand for 'that was a joke' and survived through sitcoms, cartoons and late-night shows. Online, it spread as a stock sound effect for edits, memes and soundboards, used ironically after groan-worthy puns or obvious one-liners where the humor comes from the cue itself.

The classic ba tum tss rimshot sound effect played after a bad pun or corny joke. This instant drum sting is a staple for punchlines in memes and videos.
This is the familiar two-drum and cymbal sting known as a rimshot, played in the rhythm ba-dum tss. It starts with two quick low hits on the snare or tom, followed by a bright crash that rings out and decays. The sound instantly signals that a joke has just landed, or deliberately failed, turning an ordinary line into a punchline. Its timing does most of the work, creating a short pause for laughter and making even dry, corny humor feel intentional and theatrical, like a live comedy club cue.
