Elvis Gratton is a fictional blowhard from Quebec, played by Julien Poulin in a series of short films and features co-created with Pierre Falardeau beginning in 1981. A parody of small-town machismo, he became one of the most quoted comedy figures in French-Canadian culture. 'Ça marche jamais' — 'it never works' — distills his worldview into three words of pure grumbling defeatism. As a short soundboard clip it travels well beyond Quebec, giving French-speaking creators a ready-made punchline for anything that fails on contact.
