Erika was written by German composer Herms Niel in the 1930s and named for the small heather flower celebrated in its lyrics, a symbol of home and longing for soldiers far away. It became one of Germany's most widely recognised marching songs, performed by military bands and choirs long after its first publication. In recent years the tune has spread far beyond parades through history channels, strategy games and short-form videos, where its cheerful yet martial melody is reused for ironic edits, mock ceremonies and nostalgic montages.
