Apple released iOS 6 in 2012 for iPhone and iPad, a period when Siri and voice dictation were still novel features rather than everyday tools. The short dictation chime became part of that early voice-assistant experience, signalling that the phone had heard the user and was processing speech. As later iOS versions changed Apple's system sounds, the older chime survived mainly through soundboards, nostalgia videos and retro tech edits. It remains useful today because it instantly dates a scene to the early 2010s and signals voice input without needing any explanation.
