Pokemon began as a pair of Nintendo Game Boy role playing games developed by Game Freak and released in Japan in 1996, and fainting has been a core battle outcome from the start. When a Pokemon's health reaches zero it faints and leaves the battle, accompanied by a distinctive falling sound cue. Short trimmed versions of game cues like this one later circulated on meme soundboards and in video edits, where players reused the familiar defeat signal outside the games as a quick, recognisable shorthand for losing.
