The RBMK was the Soviet graphite-moderated reactor design used at Chernobyl, where Unit 4 exploded on 26 April 1986 during a safety test. A scram, activated by the AZ-5 button, is an emergency insertion of control rods meant to shut the reactor down instantly. Clips recreating that frantic rod insertion and machinery noise circulated widely after renewed interest in Chernobyl, especially in documentaries, games and disaster edits. Online, it became shorthand for a system failing catastrophically despite a last attempt to stop it.
