The jump sound comes from Nintendo's Super Mario Bros, released in 1985, where a shorter hop and a longer press produced different leaps accompanied by this rising effect. Composed within the limits of the NES sound chip, the sweep became one of the most recognised noises in gaming. As Mario titles spread to later consoles the effect was kept and remixed, and clips of gameplay carried it to video sites and soundboards. Editors still reuse it because audiences identify a playful jump instantly without any explanation or dialogue.
