The shoebill, Balaeniceps rex, is a large wading bird found in the freshwater swamps of central and eastern Africa, where it hunts lungfish and other prey while standing almost completely still. It is also known as the whalehead or whale-headed stork because of its enormous, broad bill. Online, short clips of the bird have become popular precisely because its appearance looks unreal and its bill-clattering call sounds mechanical rather than birdlike. Wildlife creators keep returning to it for that sense of wonder and surprise.
