SUSE Linux 10 was a mid-2000s desktop Linux release, and like other operating systems of the time, it used short system sounds to mark startup, shutdown and other routine actions. As those desktops were replaced by newer versions, recordings of their sounds began circulating among retro computing fans and soundboard users who wanted to preserve a small piece of computing history. The shutdown clip survives because it is instantly recognisable to former users and works as a neat audio shorthand for a machine switching off, even for viewers who never ran SUSE themselves.
