Georges Bizet composed the Toreador Song, 'Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre,' for his 1875 opera Carmen, where the bullfighter Escamillo sings it in a tavern in Act 2. The tune outgrew the opera house through sheet music, early recordings and its swaggering, instantly hummable chorus. Classic cartoons and later films cemented it as shorthand for bullfights, grand entrances and puffed-up confidence. Sports arenas and advertisers adopted the brass refrain too, which is why the march still reads instantly even for viewers who have never seen Carmen.
