Microsoft released Windows 2000 in February 2000 as a business-focused successor to Windows NT 4.0, and its short startup chord became part of the everyday sound of office and home PCs at the turn of the millennium. As those machines were replaced, the tone survived in compilation videos, retro computing channels and meme edits that reused classic operating system sounds for nostalgia. It remains popular because it is instantly recognisable, brief enough to use as a transition, and strongly tied to memories of dial-up, CRT monitors and early internet culture.
