Electric Avenue is a 1982 single by Guyanese-British musician Eddy Grant, named after the shopping street in Brixton, London. Grant wrote it in response to the tensions and unrest in the area in the early 1980s, and its mix of reggae, rock and pop helped it become an international hit. Decades later, the riff and chorus remain instantly familiar through radio, films, adverts and social video, where the short hook works as shorthand for energy, confidence and a retro eighties mood.
