David Brent was created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant for the British sitcom The Office, first broadcast in 2001, and Gervais has revived the character in later guides and specials. This backpass clip comes from Brent's football management guide, where his office management confidence is applied to tactics he barely understands. Online, football fans and editors adopted the line as a shorthand reaction for negative, safety first passing, sharing it in match edits, gaming clips and group chats whenever play goes backwards instead of forward.

Ricky Gervais as David Brent gives a deadpan backpass tip from David Brent's Guide to Football Management, perfect for awkward football moments and edits.
This is a short voice clip of Ricky Gervais in character as David Brent, delivering a line about the backpass during his mock-serious football management guide. Brent treats a simple defensive pass like profound tactical wisdom, speaking in that flat, self important office manager tone fans recognise instantly. The humour comes from the gap between how seriously he presents it and how basic the advice actually is. Dropped over a real backpass, a keeper mistake or a teammate passing backwards under pressure, it turns a dull moment into a dry, cringe comedy punchline.
