Half-Life was released by Valve in 1998 and follows Gordon Freeman through the Black Mesa research facility after an experiment goes wrong. The scientists scattered through the facility are helpless non-player characters who panic, flee and scream when attacked by aliens or soldiers, and their original voice lines became instantly recognisable to PC players. As GoldSrc modding, Counter-Strike and later Garry's Mod kept the engine alive, those screams were ripped and reused in machinima, YouTube edits and soundboards, where this dying cry remains a shorthand for an over-the-top game death.

The panicked death scream of a Black Mesa scientist from Half-Life, used in gaming edits and memes for dramatic or funny character deaths online.
This is the short, frantic death cry of one of the scientists from Half-Life as he is killed in Black Mesa. It starts with a sharp gasp and quickly escalates into a panicked, high-pitched scream that cuts off abruptly after just over two seconds. The voice acting is earnest and terrified, which is exactly why it lands so well out of context. Played over an unrelated fall, explosion or fail, it instantly turns a minor accident into a melodramatic disaster and makes the victim seem hilariously doomed.
