Sonya Blade is a long-running Special Forces soldier in the Mortal Kombat series, and this scream comes from Mortal Kombat 9, the 2011 fighting game also known as Mortal Kombat. In the game she fights with military weapons and martial arts, and vocal reactions like this one accompany hits, throws and special moves during matches. Clips of character voices from the game later spread across soundboards and editing communities, where short, recognisable reactions are reused out of context. Fans keep using this scream because it is instantly tied to Sonya and to classic Mortal Kombat combat.

Sonya Blade's scream from Mortal Kombat 9, a sharp female battle cry used in fight edits, reaction videos and gaming memes for dramatic defeats.
The clip captures Sonya Blade letting out a high-pitched, urgent scream during combat in Mortal Kombat 9, lasting just over three seconds. Her voice rises sharply, cracks slightly under strain, and cuts off abruptly, giving it a raw, panicked energy rather than a polished movie scream. It sounds like a fighter caught off guard by a sudden hit, which makes it instantly recognisable to Mortal Kombat fans. In edits, that sudden burst of alarm grabs attention, sells a moment of shock or defeat, and adds a comic or dramatic punch that a silent reaction shot simply cannot deliver on its own.
