Mukyu comes from Touhou Project, the long-running bullet hell series created by ZUN, where Patchouli Knowledge is the quiet librarian of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Fans turned her small flustered noise into a defining catchphrase, popularised further through doujin works and the fan comedy series Touhou M-1 Grand Prix, featuring Patchouli and Meiling. Clips and remixes spread across Nico Nico Douga, YouTube and soundboards, and the sound stayed popular because it is instantly recognisable, very short, and easy to drop into any cute or awkward anime edit.

Mukyu is Patchouli Knowledge's cute catchphrase from Touhou Project, a short squeaky voice clip used for anime reactions and meme edits online.
Mukyu is a tiny, high-pitched vocal squeak delivered in a flat but adorable tone, lasting less than a second. It is Patchouli Knowledge's signature catchphrase from Touhou, meant to sound like a small, flustered noise rather than a real word. The clip cuts in and out abruptly, which makes it feel like a cute interruption or a character short-circuiting from embarrassment or surprise. Viewers instantly read it as shy, nerdy and endearing, so a single mukyu can soften a scene, punctuate a joke, or turn an ordinary anime moment into something memeable.
