The exact source of this clip is not clearly documented, so it is best understood as an online gaming reaction sound rather than a line from a known show or film. Its name comes from the gaming slang for tanking, when a player or team loses on purpose, often to get a better draft pick or a lower ranking. As short reaction sounds spread through gaming edits, streams and meme pages, this clip found a niche for moments that look too bad to be accidental. It remains useful because tanking jokes are instantly recognisable to players, even without any backstory.

The proper tanking sound effect is a short clip used in gaming and meme edits to call out someone who is deliberately losing or playing badly in a match.
Proper Tanking is a short reaction clip built for gaming edits, used when a player seems to be throwing a match on purpose rather than just having a bad game. The sound works as a pointed callout, turning a missed shot, a strange rotation or a sudden loss into a joke about deliberate tanking. Dropped at the exact moment the play falls apart, it tells viewers how to read the clip without a caption or explanation. The effect is dry and teasing rather than angry, which makes it fit ranked fails, squad banter and highlight reels where the joke is on the player, not the game itself.
