Team Fortress 2, released by Valve in 2007, made random critical hits a core part of its combat, dealing triple damage with a much louder, more distinct impact sound than normal attacks. That audio cue helped players instantly recognize danger in chaotic fights. As TF2 clips and montages spread on YouTube and later short form video, editors began lifting the crit sound on its own for comedy damage in other games and real life clips. It remains popular because longtime players recognize it immediately, even without any TF2 footage.
