The break comes from Amen, Brother, a 1969 B-side by American soul group The Winstons, where drummer Gregory Coleman plays the solo in the middle of the track. Rediscovered by hip hop producers in the 1980s, it was sped up, chopped and looped until it became the rhythmic foundation of jungle and drum and bass in the 1990s. From there it spread into rave, breakbeat and countless remixes, and online creators still reuse it whenever a scene needs that recognisable, high-energy sampled drum sound.
