Rich Men North of Richmond was written and performed by Oliver Anthony and released online in August 2023, quickly going viral for its plain language about wages, taxes and political power. Recorded simply outdoors with acoustic guitar, the song reached a wide audience through social media sharing and news coverage, then topped charts despite its independent release. Its opening became widely reused because it establishes the singer, setting and complaint within seconds, allowing creators to reference the whole song's working class message without playing the full track.
Tentang suara ini
The opening of Rich Men North of Richmond by Oliver Anthony, featuring raw acoustic guitar and the first sung lines used in working class edits.
This clip captures the spare opening of Rich Men North of Richmond, where a lone acoustic guitar and Oliver Anthony's strained, plainspoken vocal set the tone immediately. There is no big production, just picking, breath and the first weary lines about long days and low pay. That rawness is the effect: it feels honest, tired and defiant rather than polished. Listeners recognise the mood in seconds, even before the chorus arrives, making the opening work as an instant signal of frustration with work, money and distant power.
