Brazilian phonk is a fast, bass-heavy offshoot of phonk, a style rooted in Memphis hip-hop samples and later reshaped by producers in Brazil with heavier drums and a darker, more aggressive sound. It spread widely through short-form video, where its relentless low end became a signature backing track for edits, car videos and workout clips. Its popularity has continued because the sound is instantly recognisable, easy to cut to, and works across many types of footage without needing lyrics or a familiar melody.
