The coffin dance meme grew out of videos of dancing pallbearers in Ghana, whose joyful funeral processions were filmed and shared online. In early 2020 those clips were paired with the electronic track Astronomia and began spreading across TikTok, YouTube and Instagram as a shorthand for a disastrous ending. The format stuck because the music instantly signals that something has gone badly wrong, and creators still reuse the same pairing for fails, gaming deaths and unexpected twists years after the original trend peaked.
