The Hymn to Liberty was written as a poem by Dionysios Solomos in 1823, during the Greek War of Independence, and later set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros. Greece adopted it as its national anthem in 1865, and Cyprus later adopted the same anthem. Although the full poem runs to 158 stanzas, only the opening verses are normally sung at official occasions. It is heard at state ceremonies, Olympic events and football matches, and its long history helps explain why it still carries such strong patriotic meaning for Greek audiences around the world.
