Sound designer Jimmy MacDonald created this effect for the Mickey Mouse cartoon A Gentleman's Gentleman, released on 28 March 1941. It was made to sell a comic impact in classic Disney animation, combining a metal hit with a whistle and rattle. The clip later circulated through the Hollywood Edge sound effects library, where editors could reuse it far beyond its original cartoon. Because it is so brief and instantly recognisable as cartoon violence without any dialogue, it has survived as a go-to accent for slapstick edits, memes and short-form videos.
