The Tusch has long been a staple of German Karneval, the festive season celebrated especially in the Rhineland with parades, costumes and stage shows full of jokes and speeches. A house band plays the short flourish to mark a punchline, cue applause and keep the programme moving between acts. That stage tradition carried easily into radio, television and later online videos, where editors use the same flourish as a ready-made rimshot for German jokes, sketches and funny announcements, even far outside the carnival season itself.
