Pac-Man was released as an arcade game by Namco in Japan in 1980 and quickly became one of the most successful and recognisable video games ever made. The death sound is part of its original arcade audio, heard every time a ghost catches Pac-Man and a life is lost. As retro gaming clips, speedruns and meme edits spread online, the short wail became shorthand for losing, separate from the gameplay itself. Its simplicity and instant recognition keep it useful decades later, especially in short-form video.
