Infiniminer was released in 2009 for Windows by developer Zach Barth, who later founded Zachtronics. Designed as a competitive multiplayer game about digging for ore in a procedurally generated voxel world, it was short lived as a commercial project after its source code leaked. Its influence lasted much longer because Minecraft creator Markus Persson cited it as a major inspiration. The theme survived through game rip uploads, forums and history videos, and it is now used less as a soundtrack and more as an audio shorthand for the birth of the voxel sandbox genre.
