Return by Death is the central ability in Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World, the light novel series by Tappei Nagatsuki adapted into anime in 2016. Protagonist Subaru Natsuki restarts from a set point every time he dies, remembering loops that everyone else forgets. The concept became one of the series most discussed elements, and clips of the activation spread through anime edits, AMVs and meme videos. Fans still use the sound to signal a reset, a second chance or a timeline that went badly wrong.

Return by Death is the dramatic Re:Zero sound effect tied to Subaru's time loop ability, used in anime edits for death, resets and shocking reveals.
This clip captures the Return by Death moment from Re:Zero, when Subaru Natsuki dies and time snaps back to an earlier checkpoint. The audio builds with a dark, tense atmosphere, a sharp supernatural surge and an unsettling echo that feels like reality rewinding against his will. It does not rely on a catchphrase, the dread comes from the sound design itself and the knowledge that everything after the death is erased. Viewers instantly feel panic, trauma and disbelief, which makes the moment land much heavier than a normal anime death scene in an edit.
