Megalovania was composed by Toby Fox and first appeared in the 2009 EarthBound Halloween Hack before a version was used in Homestuck and then reworked for Undertale in 2015. In Undertale it accompanies the optional Genocide Route fight against Sans, turning a track already known online into his signature theme. Clips of its opening notes spread through fan videos, remixes and edits, where the riff alone became shorthand for Sans, difficult bosses and a character revealing hidden power.
