The melody comes from the Toreador Song, sung by the bullfighter Escamillo in Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, first performed in 1875. Its bold, marching tune became one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music, and music box arrangements later gave it a lighter, toy-like quality that circulates widely as a short audio clip. Creators now use that contrast between grand opera and a tiny music box for humour, nostalgia and dramatic entrances, keeping a nineteenth-century aria familiar to audiences who may never have seen the opera itself.
