Festa Junina originated from European Midsummer celebrations of Saint John the Baptist, brought to Brazil during Portuguese colonization and adapted with local music, food and dance. São João, on June 24, became its peak date, especially in the Northeast. The greeting Viva São João spread at parties, church festivals and school events long before phones, then moved naturally to WhatsApp as a short festive audio people forward every June. Its popularity returns each season because the phrase alone announces the whole celebration.
